Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained two trawlers in Tuaran and Kota Belud waters early Friday for fishing within less than three nautical miles.

MMEA Sabah and Labuan Director First Admiral Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah said the Sabah Marine Surveillance System (SWASLA) radar detected two suspicious activities in Tanjung Tembungo, Tuaran and Teluk Ambong, Kota Belud.

He said the information was relayed to a team conducting routine operations in Kota Kinabalu waters to detect and verify the locations.

“When our patrol team arrived in Tanjung Tembungo waters at 3.30am, it found a trawler fishing within three nautical miles.

“The boat and crew are suspected of committing violations of the Fisheries Act 1985 and the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952/60,” he said.

Mohd Rosli said the patrol team intercepted another trawler in Teluk Ambong waters around 4.50am.

“The trawler, which was found fishing along the coastal area, committed a violation of the Fisheries Act 1985 and the Immigration Act 1959/63 as the four crew members did not have valid work permits.

“The two trawlers were taken to Sabah State Maritime Jetty in Sepanggar for further investigation,” he said.
