Kota Kinabalu: The State Government’s directive for cluster-hit schools to close, issued on Saturday, is a reminder to school managements to take the Covid-19 situation seriously, said Sabah’s Covid-19 spokesperson Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun.“This drastic action is also a reminder to teachers, students and parents to take proactive measures to reduce the risk of infection among students and schools. All standard operating procedures in the workplace/schools must be enforced stringently. “The decision (for schools to close) was made to protect more the rest of the students and teachers from infection and ensure transmissions can be localised and not spread further,” he said in a statement, Saturday. As of Jan 29, a total of 11 clusters involving educational institutes around Sabah were recorded in the span of nearly two weeks, raising concern among the public. Of the 11 cluster-hit schools, 10 schools are facilitated under the Malaysian Education Ministry, while the other is a madrasah-type school. Sabah’s cases fell below the 300 mark to 267 on Sunday from 358 the day earlier. No deaths or new clusters were recorded. Masidi said Tuaran topped the list with 55 cases, followed by Sandakan (53), Kota Kinabalu (53), Tawau (22), Penampang (14), Papar (12), Ranau (10), Putatan (10) and Lahad Datu (7).

“Only 16 cases are from active clusters. Nearly 17 per cent or 45 cases involve children below age 12, who are ineligible for the vaccine. Another 13 patients are unvaccinated although eligible,” he said. He added that 104 were sporadic infections while 131 were close contacts. Masidi said 264 out of 267 cases were category one and two infections that do not require hospital treatment, while there is one case each in category three, four and five. Some 202 Covid-19 patients have been discharged from the hospital while 775 patients are currently receiving treatment at hospitals, low risk quarantine and treatment centres (PKRCs), prisons/temporary detention centres and private facilities.

On Sabah’s immunisation programme, Masidi said 6,878 individuals were vaccinated on Jan 28, of which 6,828 were adults and 50 were teenagers. He said as of Jan 28, a total of 2,409,936 individuals have completed both doses, of which 76.03 per cent were adults, while 2,454,115 have gotten their first dose, of which 76.74 per cent were adults. Masidi added that a total of 337,256 teenagers have received their first dose, while 312,820 have completed both doses, which is 72.08 per cent of the teenage population.
