Filipino jailed for pick pocketing

Kota Kinabalu: A Filipino was sentenced to 15 months jail for stealing a handphone.Jumalah Abdul Malik, 19, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to committing the offence at 6.23pm on Sept 10 this year at the Wholemart shop, Gaya Street here.

The court was informed by the prosecution that the complainant one Zitylin Merkado was inside the shop when an unknown man, later identified as Jumalah snatched the handphone from in the back pocket of her pants.
The worker of the shop immediately caught Jumalah and handed him to police.
Jumalah was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 10 years or fine or both on conviction.
The court ordered him be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his sentence.

In another case, a 30-year-old woman was fined RM1,000 or one week jail for having illegal gambling paraphernalia.
Noreedah Beehu admitted to having seven Wah Hui slips at 4pm on Oct 8, in front of a tailor shop, at Putatan new township. The offence under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act carries a jail term of up to six months, or fine of up to RM3,000, or both, on conviction.

Duty counsel Ashraaf Danial Zakaria representing Noreedah, requested leniency on the grounds that she has no other convictions on record and has her sibling as her dependents.
Inspector Albert Basiri, prosecuting, applied for an adequate sentence.
