Thai jailed and fined for assaulting his co-worker
Kota Kinabalu: A 36-year-old Thai national was jailed two years and fined RM1,000 or one month’s jail for assaulting his co-worker with a knife here two years ago.

Kitchen helper Sriboonjit Jirawat was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest after he pleaded guilty before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to the charge.

Sriboonjit admitted to committing the offence against Yakub Abdullah at 9.50am on July 27, 2019 at the emergency staircase of Block 1, Api-Api Centre here.

The charge was read out to him by a Thai language interpreter.

Sriboonjit had on Nov 3, 2019 claimed trial to the charge under Section 324 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 10 years’ jail or with fine or with whipping or with any two of such punishments, on conviction.

The prosecution in tendering the facts of the case, told the court that prior to the incident, Sriboonjit and Yakub were walking together when Sriboonjit suddenly stabbed him with the knife.

Counsel Kimberly Ye, representing Sriboonjit, informed the court that he was a first offender and has no previous conviction record and was remorseful and apologised to the victim and court. Kimberly submitted that Sriboonjit is also suffering from mental illness  - schizophrenia.

The counsel applied for a two years jail from the date of his arrest on July 27, 2019 with no whipping or fine be imposed as he wanted to return to his country and applied for him not to be referred to the Immigration Department.

Inspector Albert Basiri prosecuted. Together with Kimberly was counsel Ram Singh, Timothy Daut, and Chen Wen Jye.
