New chapter for sea turtle conservation

SANDAKAN: The very day after the AquaGoat Crypto Currency-funded new hatchery was built, two green turtles landed in Libaran Island in the morning of September 30 and laid a total of 147 eggs.   AquaGoat Sea Turtle Hatchery thus made history when Honorary Wildlife Warden Sardi bin Baral decided to bury the two clutches of eggs in the newly-constructed site it kicked started another chapter for the sea turtle conservation work on Libaran.

“This new hatchery was, in fact, completed just a few hours ago in the day and it is constructed on the north western side of the island, nearer to the village,” said an excited Alex Yee, President of Foster (Friends Of Sea Turtles Education & Research) who was there to personally supervise the construction as his team completed it within four days.

“We could have completed it earlier had we not experienced heavy downpour,” he said “Needless to say, we were ecstatic to have two sea turtle landings right after we have completed the construction of this new sea turtle hatchery barely a few hours ago during the day,” said Yee as he installed the signboard which named the hatchery as “AquaGoat Sea Turtle Hatchery”.

Tracing the history of the new AquaGoat Sea Turtle Hatchery, Yee said: “It went back to June 13, 2021 when I secured a sponsorship funding from a USA-based company, AquaGoat Finance, towards the construction of a new turtle hatchery and funds to carry out 500m of community beach cleaning on Libaran island for a year. “In fact, Foster has been operating a sea turtle protection programme on the island for the last nine years through a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) signed with Sabah Wildlife Department on August 27, 2018.”

“What sets this sponsorship apart is that the amount will be paid using AquaGoat tokens, a next generation ecological DeFi (decentralised finance) token,” Yee explained. “As mentioned in their website, AquaGoat token is a yield-generating social crypto currency which recognises the harmful effects of manmade processes on the oceans and aims to reduce, mitigate and reverse these effects. “The team of AquaGoat Finance, therefore, sets aside a portion of every transaction fees to an AquaGoat ‘Ocean Blue Fund’ which the team uses to fund ocean cleaning and marine conservation initiatives.”

Jhunehl

Meanwhile, Jhunehl Fortaleza, Charity and Outreach Coordinator of AquaGoat Finance, said in a message from the USA: “This is one of the partnerships that is so near and dear to my heart.” “We are glad to finally see the hatchery been set up!” she added.

Yee said: “We have released more than 35,000 baby sea turtles into the ocean since we started this sea turtle work and with this new hatchery, we will continue to collaborate with the village community and ensure that more sea turtle landings on the island are taken care of.” While on Libaran, he also released 65 newly-hatched baby turtles into the sea. For anyone interested to make a difference by bringing back clean beaches can email to [email protected], Yee said.
