Kota Kinabalu: A total of 21 inmates who were identified to be involved in the provocation at Menggatal Immigration Detention Depot (DTI) on Friday were arrested, said City Police Chief ACP Mohd Zaidi Abdullah.

“The 21 Filipinos consisted of 14 men and seven women between the ages of 19 and 51 and they were taken to the Kota Kinabalu District Police Headquarters for further action," he said.

According to Mohd Zaidi, the police received a call at 7.05am from the DTI supervisor stating that the detainees at the DTI had rioted and needed help from the Police.

“Following that, the Light Strike Force (LSF), Criminal Investigation Division, Criminal Investigation Department, Special Branch, Public Order and Riot Unit (PORU) as well as the General Operation Force (PGA) were deployed to the location to temporarily take control of the DTI security.

Preliminary investigations found that detainees in blocks E and F made noise and had come out of their cells and hovered outside while making provocations saying ‘usir .. usir.. usir’ (evict).
