11 Viet fishermen fined RM2.9 million
Kota Kinabalu: Eleven Vietnamese were fined a total of RM2.9 million for fishing illegally on Malaysian waters.

They were two groups of the Vietnamese. The first group were skipper Do Binh Thanh, crews Danh Thanh Hoai, Ngu Yen Van Giong, Nguyen Van So, Tan Hung Xia, Do Bin Tung and Ngo Tuan Dat, aged between 30 and 42.

The second group were skipper Nguyen Thanh Phung, crews Nguyen Huu Su, Nquyen Van Thang and Pham Van Dat, aged between 32-40.

The skippers were fined RM1 million in default four months’ jail each while the crew were fined RM100,000 or spend three months in prison each.

The first group was found fishing illegally at 6.10am on May 24 this year inside a foreign vessel at Pulau Straggler waters in Kudat.

The second group committed the offence at 9.58am on April 14 this year inside a foreign vessel at Pulau Mantanani in Kota Belud.

The offence, under Section 15(1)(a) of the Fisheries Act 1985 and punishable under Section 25(a) of the same Act and read with Section 34 of the Penal Code, provides for a fine of up to RM6 million for the  skipper and RM600,000 for each crew member of the vessel, on conviction.

The court ordered the vessels and appliances to be forfeited by the Malaysian government.

After paying the fine or serving jail sentence, the Vietnamese were ordered referred to the Immigration Department. Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurun Nazifah Muhammad Iyen appeared for the prosecution.
