PETALING JAYA: Umno must not lean towards DAP in order to get Chinese support, says Tan Sri Annuar Musa.

The former Barisan Nasional secretary-general opined that MCA should remain as Umno’s “one and only option” for cooperation.

He listed three main reasons why Umno should not cooperate with DAP.

“DAP is a relatively new party that was only founded in the 1960s.

“On the other hand, Umno has been cooperating with MCA way back before independence with similar political beliefs, taking the moderation approach to solving problems.

“Secondly, according to the DAP constitution , it is a socialist party while MCA is not.

“Thirdly, DAP’s longest cooperation with any party was just 22 months, while Umno and MCA have been together for over 60 years,” he said in an interview with Sin Chew Daily.

The Federal Territories Minister said it was not right for some Umno top leaders to explore a possible collaboration with DAP.

“The multiracial factor is important for nation-building.

“With Sabah and Sarawak included after independence, it means Malaysian politics needs to be diverse.

“With the Chinese being the second largest population, the cooperation between Umno and MCA has been good and this has been Umno’s unchanged stance,” he said.

Annuar added that Chinese support for DAP should not be judged just from the results of previous elections.

“It appears that many Chinese supported DAP but it is only temporary due to occurrence of some issues.

“Umno should have faith in Chinese voters and not look at the results of one or two general elections.

“I don’t think the Chinese will support DAP forever as we can see now that many are distancing themselves from the party,” he said.

The Umno supreme council member and Ketereh Umno division chief also said it was important to have a stable political situation in the country, saying that the people strongly reject all kinds of racial, chauvinist and extreme ideologies.

“Although Umno and the Malays are inseparable, this does not mean the party, in uniting the Malays, would be against the non-Malays.

“Umno exists to unite the Malays politically. Every race has a party to represent them.

“When the country is facing an emergency or any important issues, the racial factor will disappear immediately,” he said.

Annuar opined that cooperating with DAP could possibly bring Umno down as many were aware that both parties could not see eye to eye.

“DAP always objects for the sake of objecting and often opposes Umno. When DAP was in power, they even tried to recognise communism and worship the leader of the Communist Party of Malaya.

“This is against our principles, culture and stance. That’s why we cannot cooperate with DAP just for power,” he said.

Annuar, who was removed as Barisan secretary-general on Jan 5, said he had yet to receive an official letter on the matter.

“But it’s okay, I don’t mind. They can fire me if they want.

“I have more time and am happier as many people want to meet me,” he quipped.
