Kota Kinabalu: The appointment of women to lead the Sabah Attorney-General’s Chambers and Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) has proven that the State Government recognises and respects the role and leadership of women, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor.

He said it was part of the Sabah Government’s efforts to ensure that the participation of women, particularly officers with extensive experience in their departments or organisations, was given due recognition.

“I hope the department or organisation that they lead will be more excellent and competitive, and will progress in line with the Sabah Maju Jaya (Let Sabah Prosper) slogan. “I congratulate Nor Asiah and Noorliza who are appointed to lead these important positions,” he said at the presentation ceremony of the appointment letters to the new State Attorney-General and Kota Kinabalu Mayor at the State Administrative Centre, here, Monday.

Sabah Deputy Attorney-General Datuk Nor Asiah Mohd Yusof and DBKK Director-General Noorliza Awang Alip received their appointment letters as the new Sabah Attorney-General and Kota Kinabalu Mayor, respectively, both effective in January.

Also present at the ceremony were Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Abidin Madingkir; State Secretary Datuk Safar Untong and State Public Service Department Director Datuk Datu Rosmadi Datu Sulai.

Meanwhile, Nor Asiah, who started her career in 1995, expressed appreciation and gratitude to the State Government for the trust given to her to lead the State Attorney-General’s Chambers. She replaces Datuk Brenndon Keith Soh, who resigned on Nov 23 just four months after his appointment in July.

“A lot needs to be done in this department such as updating and reviewing existing laws, including the law on strata title,” she said.

Nor Asiah, a lawyer and graduate of the International Islamic University Malaysia, will be the third woman to be made State AG.

The other women AGs were Datuk Kinnie Li Yun Ken (1968-1972) and Datuk Mariati Robert (2013-2017).

Nor Asiah’s appointment comes after Soh, who was appointed by the previous Warisan Plus state government, resigned from the post in an apparent mutual agreement between the State and him.

Soh is now placed at the Chief Minister’s Department as a legal advisor.

Echoing Noor Asiah’s sentiment, Noorliza said her appointment as the Kota Kinabalu Mayor was an appreciation from the State Government, which would be an encouragement for other women, particularly civil servants in the State.

Noorliza, who began her career at DBKK as an assistant secretary in 1996, is the first woman to be appointed as the City Mayor.
