Kota Kinabalu: A 41-year-old single mother was sentenced to a total of nine months’ jail for using fake documents to claim the cost of the short-term entrepreneurship implementation programme amounting to RM19,800.

Sessions Court Judge Abu Bakar Manat handed a month’s jail on the first to third count, while two months’ jail each on fourth to sixth count for Auralee who pleaded guilty to all six charges, Thursday.

On the first to fifth count, Auralee had used the fake document which was the list of participants in the Anyaman Manik Kreatif-Motif Etnik Sabah course dated July 24, 25, 26, 27 and 28, 2017 organised by the Sabah Youth and Sport Ministry.

The charges stated that Auralee had produced the documents to the ministry to claim the implementation cost of the programme which was held in Kg Kadamaian, Kota Belud.

She committed the offence at the ministry office, here on Aug 1, 2017.

On the sixth count, Auralee had used a fake trading licence under the name of Syarikat Insan Mahir Enterprise for the same purpose at the same place and time.

All the offences under Section 471 of the Penal Code and punishable under Section 468 of the same Code which provides for a jail term of up to seven years, and fine, upon conviction.

The court ordered Auralee to serve the jail sentence concurrently from the day of conviction on Thursday.

During mitigation, Auralee who was not represented, apologised for her wrongdoings.

She said that it was her first offence and that she has three children aged between 10 and 19.

Auralee asked for leniency and was willing to do community work.

However, Prosecuting Officer Rekhraj Singh from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence as to give a lesson to Auralee as well as the public at large.

He submitted that even though the programme had been done but it caused the government lost due to Auralee’s act to falsify the documents.
