Prophet was not running away from Mecca: Minister
Zulkifli
Kuala Lumpur: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Seri Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri today clarified that Prophet Muhammad had left Makkah for Madinah following Allah’s command and request, and not because he was running away.

“In the Fiqh Al-Sirah book written by Syeikh Dr Muhammad Said Ramadhan Al-Buti which defines hijrah (migration), the scholar said by moving to Madinah, the Prophet was not simply running away but was obeying Allah’s command.

“In religion, ‘hijrah’ carries a different meaning for such a term,” he said during the oral question-and-answer session at the Dewan Rakyat sitting Tuesday.

He was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Mohd Fasiah Mohd Fakeh (Bersatu-Sabak Bernam) on whether Mohamad Sabu (PH-Kota Raja)’s statement during the debate session in Parliament Monday, that Prophet Muhammad had once become a ‘refugee’, could be classified as an insult.

Before answering the question, Zulkifli apologised for not being in the Dewan Rakyat while the Amanah president was debating on the motion of thanks for the royal address.

To Mohd Fasiah’s original question on the number of complaints received against people who insulted Prophet Muhammad, Zulkifli said as at June 30, the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) through its monitoring unit had received and screened 42,500 complaints made via social media.

“From the total, only 431 were identified as complaints and 83 related links have been extended to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for further action.

“Based on these complaints, the MCMC has studied the contents and will take action under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” he said.

Zulkifli said Jakim would continue to work together with the MCMC, police and all state religious authorities to curb the act of insulting the religion.

He added that efforts to create awareness of the beauty of Islam among Malaysians would be intensified to correct misunderstandings towards reducing such cases.
