TAWAU: Some 108 individuals from Malaysia, including 22 Indonesians stranded in Nunukan, Indonesia, were escorted into Tawau waters, Thursday. Tawau Maritime Director Capt Siva Kumar Vengadasalam said a special ferry carrying the individuals arrived at Tawau Ferry Terminal (TFT) at 11am after being accompanied for almost an hour from the Malaysian-Indonesian border.

“The special operation to escort their return involved Malaysian Maritime and Marine Police patrol boats,” he said.

“The special ferry was allowed by the State Government to depart from Pulau Nunukan, Indonesia, to enter Malaysia through Tawau waters. The passengers also underwent screening and disinfection processes as soon as they arrived in TFT, and they will be placed in the quarantine centre for 14 days.”

He also urged the maritime communities in the district to continue to provide their cooperation by complying to the Movement Control Order (MCO).

“We will continue to intensify our patrols and enforcement at our boundary waters during MCO period to curb any external threat, particularly related to the Covid-19 outbreak,”.

He added, any crime, complaint or emergency assistance in the sea can by directed to the Twau Maritime Operations Centre at 089-752115 or MERS 999.
