Kota Kinabalu: A security guard sustained injuries in his bid to recapture 18 illegals awaiting deportation who escaped from the Manggatal Temporary Detention Centre, near here, Sunday.

City Police Chief ACP Habibi Majinji said the guard who suffered injuries to the face and head was able to recapture five of them in the 3.30pm incident.

“The remaining 13 managed to climb over the wall and escaped, resulting in a manhunt by the police K9 unit in the surrounding areas.

“As a result, five more were nabbed and one was captured this (Monday) morning, so a total of 11 were recaptured,” he told a press conference at the Kota Kinabalu District Police Headquarters (IPD), here, Monday.

Habibi said the police are tracking down the remaining seven escapees and urged the public to contact Kota Kinabalu police headquarters at 088 221191/529211 if they come across any suspect wandering around in their areas.

“All detainees, aged between 12 and 50, are from the Philippines and the National Security Council (MKN) has an appropriate date to deport them to their home country,” he said.

The seven who are still at large have been identified as Abdillah Harun, 33, Haikal Kadapi, 12, Julham Sahdul, 21, Jamal Nashir, 26, Rafie Sakib, 22, Abdul Damsil, 41, and Topi Topi Jul, 50.

Habibi said the case is being investigated under Section 223/224 of the Penal Code for escaping from detention and negligence, which resulted in the breakout.

On Sunday, a message which started making its round on social media claimed that the shoeless detainees who were wearing “regular” clothes made their escape through the rear fence of the facility.

Instances of detainees escaping from Temporary Detention Centres in Sabah is not uncommon

Last year in March, five Filipinos, including a youth, escaped from the Menggatal Temporary Detention Centre, but one was immediately recaptured.

Two other Filipinos also managed to flee from the same detention centre in March 2017.
