New Sabah boss vows a more effective MMEA

Kota Kinabalu: Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Maritime First Admiral Mohd Rosli Abdullah has been appointed as the new Director of the Sabah and Labuan MMEA effective March 4.He replaces Rear Admiral Kamaruszaman Abu Hassan who has been appointed Director of the Malaysia Maritime Security and Monitoring Division in Putrajaya.

The handing-over of duties between Mohd Rosli and Kamaruszaman was held at the State Maritime Office in Wisma WB, Kolombong, witnessed by MMEA Director-General Maritime Vice-Admiral Datuk Mohd Zubil Mat Som.
Mohd Zubil in his speech hoped Sabah Maritime Maritime performance can be further enhanced, especially against crime as well as in search and rescue at sea.
“I believe the challenges faced by maritime are huge because of the geography where there are a total of 492 islands with a vast expanse of water compared to other states in Malaysia at 84,003 sq km with a coastline of 1,440km, including the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone),” he said.
According to him for the year 2019, the Sabah and Labuan MMEA recorded a total of 26,460 inspections with 163 arrests.

“This year the State MMEA conducted 246 inspections and arrested 50, including two drug cases with estimated value of RM 2.55 million in Tawau.
“A total of 44 SAR operations were carried out last year where 133 out of the 176 victims were rescued. For this year, there were seven cases with 15 out of 17 victims rescued.

“Implementation of the Safety Awareness Campaign by the agency was seen as helpful in educating the public about life safety while at sea,” he said.

“Collaboration with other security agencies should be strengthened, including how to deal with threats, kidnappings, smuggling of migrants as well as militant terrorists,” he said.
