Kota Kinabalu: Prompt action on the part of local authorities resulted in the rescue of 56 human trafficking victims in Zamboanga City Tuesday. They were about to head for Sandakan.

The female victims coming from various areas in Luzon and Visayas arrived at the Zamboanga City International Airport in the morning.

Upon arrival, local anti-recruitment enforcement personnel stationed at the airport noticed the suspicious movements of the victims prompting the authorities to respond accordingly.

Investigation revealed that the victims were supposed to leave for Sandakan, in Sabah, (Malaysia) onboard the weekly ferry service in the afternoon of the same day.

The victims said their recruiter promised them employment upon arrival in Sabah in exchange for specific recruitment service fee.

The recruiter managed to elude arrest from the enforcement personnel.

All the victims had passports but failed to produce the relevant employment documents required by the various local government agencies, including certificate of employment from foreign employers.

The authorities also quoted the victims as saying they were recruited for high-paying jobs in Sabah.

Meanwhile, the Sabah Security Council together with the relevant local authorities deported 87 undocumented Filipinos in Sandakan last Wednesday.

The deportees underwent thermal check-up before they were permitted to board M/V Antonia 1 which left Sandakan Port bound for Zamboanga City late Wednesday afternoon.
