RANAU: Tourism players in the district are urged not to despair when they see not many tourists from China coming to Kundasang, Mount Kinabalu and other parts of Ranau.Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Christina Liew said due to the outbreak of Corona virus disease in China, Sabah has been losing out on China tourists.

“However, I am confident this will not last more than three to six months.

“After this problem is solved, tourists from China would resume visiting Sabah. But even though Chinese tourists have dropped, we still welcome more tourists from Europe, Australia, USA and other countries,” she said.

Liew also said her Ministry has already applied for a grant from the Federal Ministry of Finance to upgrade Ranau Poring Hotspring that was started 43 years ago.

“Ranau and Kundasang are very important places for tourism in Sabah and Malaysia, so the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment will not leave these two areas alone.

“We expect the allocation to be approved so that the move to transform Poring Hotspring can begin this year as well.

“We are grateful to have such a good and diligent Member of Parliament here and he works closely with our Ministry. We will talk about anything that is lacking in this area, and hopefully we will get enough funding to implement it,” she said, when officiating the Ranau District Level Chinese New Year Celebration 2020 at the Dewan Masyarakat Ranau on Thursday.

Earlier Ranau MP Jonathan Yasin requested the State Ministry to devise a mechanism of how the abandoned Mamut Copper Mine could be transformed into an attractive tourist destination here.

Also present were President of Hakka Association Ranau cum Chinese Kapitan Paginatan Datuk Jimmy Tham Yuk Leong, Organising Chairman Chong Peck Heng@Pehing, Ranau Assistant District Officer Mohd Yuesri Bin Yusoff, various Chinese group leaders, heads of departments, staffs from the Ranau Parliamentary Office among others.
