Four RM89m Sabah flood mitigation projects approved
KOTA KINABALU: The Federal Government has approved four projects costing RM89 million in the fourth rolling plan (RP4) of the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP) to resolve the long-standing flood problem in Sabah.

State Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Junz Wong (pic) said these included the two upcoming flood mitigation projects in Giling, Tuaran and Dah Yeh Villa, here.

Wong, whose ministry oversees the Sabah Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID), said they will also conduct a flood mitigation study for Membakut as well as a comprehensive flood mitigation design for Kota Marudu.

“We are also working hard towards the potential flood mitigation projects of Moyong Package 4, Lido Phase 2 and Tawau Phase 2.

“With all these efforts to improve the drainage infrastructure in Sabah, I pledge full support for the department’s endeavour to make these projects a success,” he said at a Chinese New Year celebration hosted by the Sabah Irrigation and Drainage Department at Pam House, Likas, here, Monday.

Wong said Sabah needs more funds from the Federal Government for flood mitigation works all over the State.

“These includes developing drainage and irrigation infrastructure, especially in Membakut and Kimanis.

“In the wake of the recent flooding in Membakut, we realise we need better infrastructure to address the flooding issue in Sabah. But we can’t do anything if the funds are not sufficient.

“We are hoping that the Federal Government will provide more allocation to solve this problem,” he said.

Meanwhile, Wong advised real estate developers to buy directly from contractors, instead of using middleman, in order to resolve the shortage of sand supply.

He said 10 contractors have been appointed to sell sand at standard price.

“The contractors need to obtain a licence to sell sand from the Sabah Land and Survey Department within this week. We will monitor these contractors,” he said.

Junz also emphasised on family gathering and values which should be extended to all Sabahans during the event.

He said these values will help to overcome future challenges and build a better Sabah for the next generation.
