TAWAU: Demand for all types of face masks, including the N95, has led to stock being almost depleted in the market here as people become more aware of the importance of using the mask to protect themselves from the Wuhan coronavirus.
Charlene Ling, 29, said, it was easier to buy the mask the last two weeks. On Wednesday, most shops and pharmacies here had run out of stock.

“Luckily, I managed to buy a box of Masque Maske ear-loops (containing 50 pieces) at RM30 from a pharmacy while another brand (life care surgical face mask, 50 pieces) costing RM25 per box was out of stock.
“Many people are queuing to buy masks at the pharmacy restricted to one box per person due to the high demand,” she told Daily Express.
At another pharmacy, they only sold one pack containing five pieces of mask at RM4 and restricted to only one pack per person.
A shop salesperson, who declined to be named, said, the face masks were out of stock within a few days of being restocked.

“We are forced to limit the mask sales (10 pieces cost RM6) to each customer while waiting for new stock,” he added.
Meanwhile, three individuals named Mok Chuang Kun, Lim Kok Wei and Sua Jin Wah jointly contributed 2,000 pieces of face masks to the ground crew, police personnel, airline staff, grab drivers, taxi drivers, business operators and tourists at Tawau airport because they would be the “first contact persons” vis-à-vis tourists.
