Shafie may sue Umno for questioning his roots

KIMANIS: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (pic) is planning legal action against Umno Deputy President Mohamad Hassan over his statement implying that the Warisan President is a Filipino migrant.

“I was made to understand he made a statement that the by-election in Kimanis is about Malaysia and the Philippines. Very sinister kind of thing (to say).

“Is he indicating I’m a Filipino? I am a Sabahan, a Malaysian. I have served the country for 32 years. Please do not question my roots and race,” he told reporters at the Bongawan Christmas Celebration, here, Tuesday, adding that Mohamad must apologise.

Also present were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Christina Liew, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Azis Jamman, State Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Peter Anthony, State Law and Native Affairs Minister Datuk Aidi Moktar and Kimanis by-election candidate Datuk Karim Bujang.

Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, emphasised that the positive economic achievements over the past three years underscore the Sabah government’s steadfast commitment to both the administration and development of the state.

Shafie reminded that the Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition should not involve race and religion to win votes as it would only disrupt the existing harmony in the State, particularly in Kimanis where the “battle” takes place.

On Jan 5, Mohamad said he was informed by certain parties that the Kimanis by-election was a Malaysia vs Philippines contest, which “hinted” questioning Shafie’s roots and origin.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed that a viral photograph of Shafie allegedly giving out cash had nothing to do with the Kimanis parliamentary by-election.

Sabah MACC Director, S. Karunanithy said the photograph was actually taken at a programme to distribute alms to the public after Friday prayers at Masjid Datuk Pangeran Galpam in Sandakan on Jan 3 this year.

“Sabah MACC conducted a preliminary investigation after receiving information from the public on the issue.

“Sabah MACC found that the incident took place on Jan 3, 2020 in Sandakan in conjunction with the groundbreaking ceremony for the Sandakan Airport expansion project, and not in Kimanis,” he said in a statement here, Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Shafie, denied giving money to voters when campaigning in Kimanis as claimed in the photograph, which was circulated on social media recently.

He said the photograph was taken at a programme he attended together with Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng in Sandakan recently, and had nothing to do with the Kimanis by-election.
