MOTORISTS who leave their vehicles in spaces not designated as parking lots in the city risk being slapped with a compound of up to RM300.

A City Hall spokesman said such action could be taken under the agency’s Bylaw on the Provision of Coupon Parking 2014.

He said repeat offenders faced the possibility of being taken to court where they could be fined up to RM5,000.

“Drivers can be deemed to have parked illegally if there is no demarcation painted on either side of the space occupied by their vehicles,” he said.

“This is regardless of whether their automobiles obstruct the flow of traffic in the area.”

On a complaint about a tanker frequently parked near the junction to a Luyang neighbourhood and primary school, he said its staff would be sent to verify the claim.

SUE of Luyang said the vehicle was obstructing the view of oncoming traffic.

“Pedestrians and motorists find it difficult to gauge the movement of vehicles coming from the opposite direction,” she said, adding that the tanker had also badly damaged the road shoulder and dirtied the road.

“This is especially so at night and during a downpour.”

She was at a loss to understand how the local authorities could allow the tanker driver to park in such a haphazard manner.

“I hope they will intervene before a bad accident occurs and someone comes to harm.

“I have seen many pupils walking along the junction to and from their school.

“These youngsters could very well be run down by a driver whose view has been blocked by the tanker.”

Sue provided Hotline with the location of the junction, as well as the registration plate number of the vehicle.

This information was forwarded to City Hall, which the spokesman said would facilitate efforts to deal with this problem.

“If need be, we will seek the assistance of the relevant authority to trace the owner of the tanker.”

He said the individual would be instructed not to occupy the road shoulder and would be given a grace period in which to do this.

The spokesman said a letter to this effect would be sent to the owner.

“Should he/she fail to comply with our instructions, further action will be taken against him/her.” (SS)
