KK Charity Dog Walk to raise funds
KOTA KINABALU: Barks, yelps and loud music filled the seafront of Oceanus Waterfront Mall here, Sunday, as dogs from various breeds showed up for the Kota Kinabalu Charity Dog Walk.

The four kilometre walk, is a fund raising event, jointly organised by animal welfare charity, Miracle’s Mission and Funding for Animals and Independent Rescues Association Sabah (Fair).

“We hope to create awareness for people about animal welfare, about Miracle’s Mission, about Fair and we are also trying to raise funds for local animal shelters around Sabah,” said one of the organiser, Frances Pinso.

She said proceeds from the fundraising event will be distributed to shelters according to the cases. A total of RM2,500 was raised during the event.

She said the event was also to encourage pet adoption instead of buying.

“We hope the public will adopt instead of shopping for breeds, and we also hope people will neuter their dogs especially in the village where dogs are left to stray around and when they breed, whose responsibility will the puppies be, is it the authorities, non-governmental organisations or the public,” she said.

“We hope the public will see that people walking their dogs, will give an impact to people that dogs also have rights to be in this city,” said Frances.

She said a lot of people have dogs but they don’t dare bring them out for walks, thus she hoped the event will create more awareness.

As for preparation in case one of the canines poop along the way, she said, they have prepared doggy bags and have also encouraged participants to bring their doggy bags.

Meanwhile, 30 canines strutted their way from Oceanus to the traffic light junction in Sutera Harbour.

Some of the dogs turned up donning colourful bandanas and while most came on leashes, one Bulldog was seen walking beside his owner without one, while another dog showed up in a pram.

Also joining in the walk were two recently rescued puppies, T-Rex and Ethan.

T-Rex, is a four-month-old puppy without front legs rescued from inside a drain in Bundusan several months ago, while Ethan, a three-month-old puppy, was also rescued not too long ago, according to their handler, Ana lynn.

Another dog owner, Julia Chan initially expressed concern that her furry friend, Bailey, might not be able to complete the whole four kilometre walk.

“This is the first time for Bailey participating in a walk at this distance,” she said.

It however turned out that Bailey was fitter than Julia with her saying “Good boy, more fit than me”.

Also present was Fair chairperson, Shirley Kong.
