Kota Kinabalu: A Sabahan family managed to escape the devastating Nepal earthquake that has claimed more than 2,300 lives, but are stranded outdoors and unable to return to a resort they were holidaying in near Kathmandu. The family of seven, including three children, have to remain where they are at the Gokarna Forest Resort, about 14km from Kathmandu due to the possibility of strong aftershocks, a family member Afeiza Khan said here.

She said her father Gulam Khan, 66, and mother Aishah Abdullah, 65, were together with her sister Serena Khan, and brother-in-law Ismael Toorawa and their three children were to spend the weekend at the resort.

The three children are currently safe, but are unable to return to the resort.

"Thank God they are okay. We are in contact through WhatsApp but the worry is that food might run out and they are totally cut off from Kathmandu,' she said.

Afeiza, explained that her sister's husband Ismael (from Mauritius) has been working for the United Nations Development Programme in Nepal, and her parents went there to visit them about two months ago.

"They had just arrived at the resort when the earthquake hit, and hotel staff told them to stay outdoors.

"There is a concern about the cold weather conditions later at night and also how long the food supplies may last as they unsure when they can get back to Kathmandu,' Afeiza said.

She said that Ismael was also unable to contact his house or office in Kathmandu.

"They don't know if their house was damaged by the earthquake and if their workers are safe or not. They are totally cut off,' she said.

"We, the family, here are praying for their safety,' she said, adding that she hoped assistance would reach them soon and efforts are taken to bring them back to Malaysia.
