Kota Kinabalu: Calling on former students of SMK Sanzac to come and attend the first general meeting cum semi-reunion of the newly-registered Koperasi Mantan Pelajar Sanzac Sabah Berhad (Kompass) for ex-students.It will be held on January 31 (Saturday) at 10.30am at Hotel Yaho, Sembulan, here. Registration of members begins at 8.30am. The qualifying age is 18 years and above. Director of the Malaysian Cooperative Commission, Sabah Chapter, Encik Umar Sarim Saidin will officiate at the inaugural meeting.

Currently, the cooperative's Protem Committee is headed by Chairman Noor Salleh Hj Tamanong who has 25 years' experience in the cooperative movement in Malaysia and Sabah in particular.

He is assisted by Hj Mohd Yusof Mattaim as Deputy Chairman with Hjh Lailah Awang as Secretary and Dr Azlina Ekat as Treasurer cum Publicity & Communications Officer.

Lailah is reportedly experienced in managing the teachers' cooperative apart from being a former teacher's union activist. Committee Members comprise Justina V. Kilos, Yazali Ismail, Mohiddin Majin, Rafiah Ahmad, Mohd Isa Yusof, Ag Ramlee Ag Musa, Hj Yusuf Malai Amit, Hj Raban Hj Abdullah and Lina Mohd Lin.

Following registration on December 3, 2014, KOMPASS held its first protem committee meeting 11 days later to decide on the next course of action.

While charity will begin at home in bringing benefits to former students as KOMPASS implies, Dr Azlina said the cooperative also intends to contribute to SMK SANZAC in physical and material terms.

"Our key objective is to spur the economic empowerment of ex-students provided that they join the cooperative. We hope to venture into a diversified range of income-generating entrepreneurial activities," she said.

According to Dr Azlina, the cooperative will also serve as a platform to re-connect all alumni of SMK SANZAC.

Two other aims of the cooperative are to strengthen friendship ties and unite ex-students and the present student population of the school, and to foster closer relations between the teachers and students.

Efforts to set up a body of ex-students for the common good date back to the year 2013 when a group of ex-SMK SANZAC 5A students gathered to discuss the possibility of forming an alumni association. They were Hj Sinoh Mohammad, Dr Azlina Ekat, Datuk Hamzah Sundang, Noor Salleh Hj Tamanong, Dzulkifli Ahmad, Mohd Isa Yusof, Mohiddin Majin, Hj Raban Hj Abdullah, Hjh Lailah Awang, Justina V. Kilos and Hashemah Mahur.

However, it turned out to be a futile exercise as they could not reach a consensus on the purpose of the proposed organisation. Some feared that it might just be a social club for meetings and karaoke sessions.

Subsequently, the idea of establishing a cooperative was mooted and Noor Salleh was persuaded to lead the cooperative.

The proposal also received overwhelming response from other alumni through Facebook and WhatsApp groups.

A protem committee was formed in October 2014, followed by a meeting cum SANZAC reunion, sponsored by Hj Hadi Osman and attended by some 36 ex-students in November 2014. Then and there, the name Koperasi Mantan Pelajar SANZAC Sabah Berhad (KOMPASS) was agreed upon unanimously.

In the meantime, the Principal of SMK SANZAC, Diuh Balimbang gave his consent for the word SANZAC to be incorporated into the name of the cooperative. KOMPASS was officially registered in December 2014.
