'Don't rent premises to foreigners' advice

KOTA KINABALU: Community leaders in sub-urban area here have been advised to adopt a "Turun Padang" concept as another way of making sure their respective local communities do not rent out their rooms to outsiders especially foreigners and illegal immigrants.State Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad said the concept could also forge a two-way communication for the leaders and the local communities especially in addressing social problems in their respective areas."Community leaders should regularly go down to the ground and foster rapport with the residents in their areas.

"Give your contact number to them so that any information on suspicious activities or presence of unsuspected individuals could be channeled to these leaders for further action," she said.Jainab, who is also Karambunai assemblywoman, said this when opening a gotong-royong programme organised by City Hall Pemadam (Malaysia Drug Prevention Association) with villagers of Kg.Cenderakasih in Kolombong here on Sunday.She also contributed some cash to the Neighbourhood Watch of Kg.Cenderakasih and presented cleaning tools to a representative of the village.Also present were City Hall Deputy-General Datuk Yeo Boon Hai, Luyang police and villagers of Kg.Cenderakasih.

Jainab said the strength of the programme is a reminder for the residents to the importance of cleanliness that could strengthen unity among them."I hope that each household will also ensure their compound is clean and no stagnant water that could breed aedes mosquitoes.
