Call by police meant to deter would-be criminals
SANDAKAN : The call to involve the public in crime prevention is not a reason for police to avoid carrying out tasks and responsibilities entrusted to them. Crime Prevention Department a Head and Community Safety GPA Sabah, SAC Hamdan Majid, said, on the contrary, the recommendation was more focused on the use of a comprehensive strategy to reduce the opportunity for criminals to act as they please.

"The mobilisation of effort between police and the general public is an effort that is able to reduce the chances of criminals of commit crimes in this country," he said, where people also act as eyes and ears on the transmission of such information.

Hamdan was speaking during the opening of Crime Awareness Day Sandakan District Level held at the Community Service Building, Mile 16, Gum-Gum, here.

At the event, Hamdan also presented certificates of appreciation to area grassroots leaders including RELA Gum-Gum and contribute to senior citizens.

A crime prevention talk was also presented by Inspector Kumaran Nyanasagaran of the Criminal Investigation Department IPD Sandakan, T-Baton performance by Amanita IPD Sandakan, display from units and IPD Sandakan and antique car owners in Sandakan.

Hamdan said, crime prevention is a shared responsibility and therefore, a responsive and integrated approach should be taken by all parties able to understand the roles and responsibilities, further enhancing cooperation particularly crime fighting.

He said the police also welcome step by the force that aims to make the State crime-free , through the application of the concept of 'Police and Community', a network of collaboration implemented through various community policing programmes .

Commenting on the programme, Hamdan said that among its purposes is to strengthen the relationship between police and the community.

"Through the programme, networks can be created between the community and police that will indirectly facilitate the process of disseminating information for further action," he said.

Among them, in the key result areas (NKRA) of reducing crime, the police has been and is implementing 29 initiatives or approaches including 'high profile policing', 'community policing', 'stop and talk', 'meet and greet', 'feet-on - street ', rakan cop, ops paying and other approaches.

In the meantime, Hamdan said, results of operations and police officers in collaboration with the community, this year's index crime rate in this country showed a decrease compared to last year.

As of Nov 30 , the crime rate index for Sabah showed a decline compared to the year before, with 4,772 cases this year and 5,336 cases last year which is equivalent to a decline of 564 cases or 47.40 percent.

For completion rate cases, this year saw a 47.40 percent while last year with 46.03 percent

As for burglary recorded 1,230 cases in 2014 and showed a decline of 315 cases of 20.39 percent compared to 1,545 cases in 2013.

Hamdan said all the statistics also achieve the KPI set under the NKRA.

While for Sandakan area, Hamdan said, until Nov 30, there were 534 cases and compared with the same period in 2013, where there were 707 cases and 173 cases showed a decrease of 24.47 percent equivalent.

While the rate of disposal was by 47 percent, while last year of 29.84 percent. Street crime index was of 60 cases this year, while last year a total of 76 cases recorded a decrease of 16 cases equal 21.05 percent.

For burglary crime, a total of 208 cases this year while last year with 243 showed a decrease of 35 cases equal to 14.40 percent.
