QEH malaria data help set WHO guidelines
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah and Sarawak remain the key states for field research and clinical studies that help to set government guidelines and policy on the proper and correct treatment of severe malaria, and such invaluable knowledge and experience has guided the World Health Organisation (WHO) in their medical approaches and advisory to benefit the international community.It was published that the WHO advisory on tropical medicine and international health on malaria that "although they contribute much less than P. falciparum to the global problem of severe malaria, both P. vivex and P. knowlesi can also cause severe disease and they too kill" (WHO 2014).

This has put local medical experts like Dr Timothy William of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital here in international prominence with other researchers from around the world.

He has delivered presentation in the United States on the tropical disease with the right treatment with his experience of more than 15 years working at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital here and is also the Malaysian Principal Investigator of the 'Monkeybar' project.

The 'Monkeybar' Mid-Project Workshop was successfully held from Nov 25 to 28 was launched at the Clinical Auditorium at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital here Tuesday was well attended by about a hundred doctors, nurses and tertiary institution researchers and some students.

"P. knowlesi is the commonest cause of severe malaria at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, with parasitemia major risk factor for severity.

"P. knowlesi was associated with a 2.96-fold greater risk of severity than P. falciparum.

"Early referral and treatment with artesunate was highly effective for severe malaria from all species and associated with zero mortality," Dr Timothy William stressed.

He said ultimately the achievable goal is to make sure that there are no more deaths from malaria in Sabah.
