PENAMPANG: Seven caring Rotary Clubs from District 3310 have speedily pooled their resources to bring much-needed relief to 132 families in villages badly hit by floods following torrential rain twice in the second week of the month, here. A total of 132 Natural Disaster Relief Boxes were given out to the families concerned in four deliveries. The affected villages were Kg Kolopis, Kg Tanaki, Kg Kivatu, Kg Penampang Proper, Kg Dumbai, Kg Dungkahang and Kg Kibabaig.

In some of the villages, the water level rose more than eight to 10 feet.

At Kg Kolopis, there were houses affected by landslides too while the route to Kg Kibabaig was under water for about a week. As a result, some of the victims needed to be evacuated to the community hall.

On hand to mobilise the natural disaster relief team and oversee operations were the District 3310 Assistant Governor K.P. Lu, Regional Coordinator for Disaster Relief Committee, Chiang Wei Chia, District Governor-Elect Philip Chong and District Governor Nominee Michael Yee.

District Governor-Elect Philip Chong, Regional Coordinator Chiang, Kg Kolopis Village Security & Development Committee (JKKK) Chairman, Jumino and JKKK member Jonas Sanghon, together with Rotarian Jason Ho from Kg Kolopis, identified flood victims from the village.

Kg Kivatu Village Chief, Charles Sikain, Village Security & Development Committee (JKKK) Chairman, Francis Jolinu and President-Elect Nelson Mosinoh from the Rotary Club of Penampang helped out in identifying the affected families.

President of the Rotary Club of Likas Bay, Gwendolen Vu said donations readily poured in from Rotary Clubs in District 3310 covering Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan Federal Territory, Johor, Melaka, Negara Brunei and Singapore for the purchase of District 3310 Disaster Relief Boxes.

Community Service Project Chairman, Charlie Tan from Rotary Club of Likas Bay organised the delivery of boxes to flood victims.

"Each Disaster Relief Box comprised food items worth RM200 per family, including 10kg bags of rice," Vu said, adding Kevin Chong from the Rotary Club of Likas Bay offered his vans to transport the Disaster Relief Boxes to the villages.

The first delivery of 23 Disaster Relief Boxes to the families at Kg Kolopis was made on October 10.

The following day (October 11), led by District Governor-Elect Philip and District Governor Nominee Michael, a team of Rotarians from Rotary Club of Kinabalu Sutera (led by President Fatimah Yassin and Immediate Past President Emily Chong), Rotary Club of Luyang (represented by Immediate Past President Ade Adenan), Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu (represented by Immediate Past President Chiang), Rotary Club of Likas Bay (led by President Vu), Rotary Club of Penampang (represented by President-Elect Nelson and Rotarian Dominic Lansing) and Rotary Club of Labuan Federal Territory (represented by President Rachael Ker) joined hands to distribute 60 Disaster Relief Boxes to the flood victims at Kg Tanaki and five others to five families at Kg Kivatu.

Three days later (October 14), 10 members from Rotary Club of Likas Bay, and 10 others from Rotary Club of Tanjung Aru led by President Stanley Tee Tuck Chin assisted in handing out 35 Disaster Relief Boxes to the families of Kg Penampang Proper, Kg Dungkahang, Kg Dumbai and Kg Kivatu.

Last Thursday (October 16), the fourth delivery of nine Disaster Relief Boxes to the families at Kg Kibabaig was undertaken with the help of President Tan See Ang from Rotary Club of Kinabalu South, Community Service Chairman Charlie and Gary Chieng of Rotary Club of Likas Bay.

Overall, Vu said Rotarians were happy to see the villagers' faces lighted up upon receiving the Disaster Relief Boxes.

"It may be only a small token but we hope it gave some comfort to the flood victims and showed them that there are people from far and near who empathised with them and thought of their plight," she added.
