4 family members killed in Papar and Tawau crashes
Papar: A 30-year-old local and his 51-year-old aunt were killed while three others suffered serious injuries in a fatal mishap at Km20 near Kg Mandahan along Papar-Beaufort on Wednesday.Mohd Anif bin Mohd Arif and his aunt, Gunang binti Lani, succumbed to serious head injuries when the Proton Wira Aeroback he was driving collided with a Toyota Cressida in the 1.30pm incident.

Mohd Arif whose body was extricated by firefighters died on the spot while Gunang was pronounced dead in the district hospital here about 3.30pm.

The other two passengers in the Wira are Anif's 53-year-old father and his 38-year-old uncle who sustained serious injuries and are warded at the district hospital here.

Mohd Arif and his family members were heading to their hometown in Kota Belud after visited his brother in Bongawan while a 28-year-old man who drove the Toyota Cressida was heading to Beaufort direction from here.

The Toyota driver who sustained serious injuries is warded at the Beaufort Hospital.

District Acting Police Chief here, ASP Azhari Zakaria, who confirmed the incident said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving that caused death.

In TAWAU, a father and his daughter were killed and six others were injured in collision between a Proton Wira and a Toyota Vigo on the second day of Hari Raya at Km21, Jalan Merotai-Bombalai on Tuesday evening.

District Police Chief, ACP Awang Besar Dullah, said the victims were Wira driver Mohd Aras Arfah, 37, and his third daughter, Nurul Zahirah Izzawati Mohd Aras, 5, who was seated on the front passenger seat when the accident occurred at 6.30pm near Kg Burut. Mohd Aras two other daughters, Nurul Fatihah, 9, and Nurul Fiqriyah, 7, suffered serious injuries.

The driver of the Vigo, Ramlah Abd Rahim, 33, and passengers Aris Abas, 34, Mohd Aiman Aris, 7 and Mohd Irfan Aris, 3, fortunately, suffered only light injuries.

Awang said initial investigation showed that the incident was caused by driver of the Wira, who was on his way from Merotai to Tawau township.

"When the Wira arrived at the sealed two-way road, the driver overtook two vehicles in front of him but collided with an on-coming Vigo," he said.

He said the incident was the second fatality in two days in Tawau and that it is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He urged all drivers to be disciplined on the road and to ensure the safety of their passengers and other road users especially during the festive season.

It was learnt that the deceased was on his way to the Hospital Tawau to visit his youngest son, who is sick and being cared for by his mother.

The accident caused a three-hour jam and the district's Fire and Rescue Department had to be called in to extricate Nurul Zahirah's body from the mangled Wira.

Its chief, Rudy Fredzex, said the department received a distress call at 6.41pm and immediately despatched an engine and five personnel to the scene led by Abd Katah Baral, who had just completed an operation, dubbed Ops Pokok Tumbang at SK Gabungan.

He said they arrived at the scene at 7.02pm.

His team was also assisted by five personnel and an engine from the Felda Umas Fire and Rescue Volunteer Unit and five personnel and an engine from Merotai PBS.
