SANDAKAN:  Batu Sapi MP Datuk Liew Vui Keong said the re-implementation of the barter trade at four major ports mainly in eastern Sabah will boost the economy in the State and Sandakan.

“The reimplementation of the barter trade at the Kudat, Sandakan, Tawau and Lahad Datu ports will boost the State’s and Sandakan’s economy.

“The Chief Minister is committed to enhancing Sandakan’s economy, among other things, by creating a furniture-making centre at the Sandakan Palm Oil Industrial Cluster taking up 500-acre land which has been identified.

“This and the plan to create a Free Trade Zone will intensify the economy,” said Liew during a Chinese New Year open house, here, on Sunday.

Sandakan Municipal Council President Datuk Peter Hii Chang Lik and Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong were also present at the open house.

Hii said the government is confident of solving problems faced by Sandakan people and providing more job opportunities to the locals as well as creating opportunities in the service and manufacturing sectors.

In another matter, Liew, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s decision to enter Sabah should be left to Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.

He also said the Federal Cabinet will make make a final decision on the proposal to abolish the death penalty before Parliament’s session on Mar 11. - Mardinah Jikur
