RM10m Tawau Old Folks Home by 2020

TAWAU: Minister of Health and People’s Wellbeing Datuk Stephen Wong Thien Fatt said the RM10 million reconstruction of the Air Panas Old Folks’ Home here is being implemented and it is expected to be completed by 2020.
He described the project as excellent for the residents of Tawau, especially the institution’s residents who will enjoy better and more comfortable facilities than ever before.

He said once completed, the new building can accommodate 100 occupants at one time compared to the current 40.
He said it is the government’s priority to ensure the convenience of senior citizens and that the community can continue to live actively and enjoy affection.
He said three senior citizens’ residences have been provided by the government in Sabah namely the Air Panas Old Folks’ Home in Tawau, Sri Harapan Old Folks’ Home in Sandakan and Sri Pritchard Old Folks’ Home in Kota Kinabalu, with a capacity of 250 residents in total and involving RM1.5 million yearly operating costs.

Wong said this during his official visit to the Air Panas Old Folks’ Home here, Thursday.
He said through initiatives such as Financial Aid, setting up of the Activity Centre for Senior Citizens (PAWE), the provision of artificial support and institutional services, the government is determine to raise the rank of senior citizens who have contributed a lot to the country.

This is in addition to the monthly RM350 Senior Citizens Assistance Scheme (BOT).

“Currently, there are 2,309 BOT recipients in Tawau involving a monthly payment of RM800, 000,” he said.
Wong also said that there are seven PAWE in Sabah currently, namely in Sandakan, Papar, Beaufort, Kuala Penyu, UTC Kota Kinabalu, Tawau and Keningau with a total of 1,400 registered members.
