Umno Youth backs Zahid’s handing over of duties
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth gave its undivided support to Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi handing his duties to deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the decision made by the party supreme council had somehow made the party stronger with less internal issues now.”

Speaking to reporters after chairing the Umno Youth exco meeting here, he said he hoped all factions in the party could now unite and work with Mohamad for the sake of Umno.

Following the resignations of several members of parliament and immense pressure to relinquish the Umno presidency, Zahid on Dec 18, announced his decision to hand over the duties of the president to his deputy.

“Based on the problems currently faced by the party, I have decided to entrust the deputy president with the task of carrying out the duties of the president,” he said in a statement.

“I am aware of the concerns felt by some Umno leaders, who are worried that they would face pressure, investigations and accusations which I have faced,” said Zahid, who has been hit with a slew of graft charges.

Asked to comment on talks that Umno MPs who left the party were considering to return, Asyraf said the decision was with the supreme council, adding ”leaders come and go and what is important is the party.”

Meanwhile, Asyraf said Umno Youth will provide legal aid to fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim who passed away and his family during the inquest proceedings.

The inquest will begin on Jan 18.

We will be holding a watching brief for Adib and his family and ensure justice is served.

His life is one of the 32 million Malaysian population,” he said.

On another matter, Asyraf said the youth wing would set up a secretariat to monitor prices of essential goods.

The government can control the rise in prices of essential goods but there is no proper mechanism,” he said, adding the secertariat would go to the ground to monitor the prices. – NST
