 Rethink closure plan: Wong
SANDAKAN: State Minister of Health and People’s Wellbeing, Datuk Stephen Wong, urged the Ministry of Health (MoH) to review the suggestion of closing its training institute in Sandakan.

In 2017, the MoH rebranded every Ministry of Health College (Kolej Kesihatan Malaysia) with the name Ministry of Health Training Institute (Institut Latihan Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia – ILKKM)

Through this effort also, the MoH is downscaling the number of its colleges nationwide from 33 to 14, whereby one of the suggestions is ILKKM Sandakan to be merged with ILKKM Kota Kinabalu by 2021.

“The suggestion of MoH will close the oldest training institute in Sabah, which was established in 1965.

“Over the years, the college had improved in terms of its facilities to be modern and updated so it can provides convenience and comfortable environment for both students and trainers.

“I hope the MoH will review their suggestion on closing down this institute as it has contributed to training nurses in the district. I wish for this college to be retained,” he said.

Wong, who is also Sandakan MP, visited the ILKKM Sandakan located adjacent to the Hospital Duchess of Kent.

Also present were Director of ILKKM Sandakan, Sia Seng Mui, and Director of HDOK, Dr Francis Paul.

Wong said he will raise the matter at the next State Assembly and will discuss with MoH on their reason behind the selection of ILKKM Sandakan to be closed down.

Meanwhile, Sia said she will support any steps taken by the MoH pertaining to the status of ILKKM Sandakan in the future, whether it still be the same or have to be closed down.
