Shafie chairs meeting on strengthening State security
KOTA KINABALU: A State Security Working Committee (JKKN) special meeting held at the State Administrative Building, Tuesday, discussed measures to strengthen State security.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said safety measures would be strengthened not only in hot spots but in all districts.

“We know there will be many tourists particularly during the festive season, and security steps are necessary to ensure safety is boosted from time to time,” he said.

He also said matters concerning preparedness in facing natural disasters would be discussed by the State Cabinet.

“I have instructed the Meteorological Department to give us updates on the weather condition, in addition to alerting us about flood or draught season,” he said.

He also met village chiefs during his recent work visits to several locations in the State and reminded them to keep safety a priority, particularly when it comes to fire safety and preventive measures.

“We also ensure all agencies involved boost their efforts in putting out fire and saving lives,” he added.

On aid distribution to fire victims affected by the recent fire in Pulau Banggi, he said basic essentials had been sent to the area and has directed agencies to make sure the aid reaches the victims.

He again reminded villagers to play their role in fire prevention measures.

“We are not blaming anyone, we just remind the people to make fire safety and preventive measures a priority.

“It wouldn’t be comfortable to be staying in the hall for shelter, and people must understand that it is not immediately we can build a house for them. Thus they must play their role in fire prevention measures at all times including festive seasons.”

On the development of the People’s Housing Project (PPR) in Tagasan, Semporna, he said he has directed officers concerned to address the land issues which has caused a bit of complication.

Construction of  500 units of Tagasan PPR is about RM111 million and is scheduled to be completed by 2021.

On the water treatment plant in Kalumpang, Semporna, Shafie said they hope to get it up and running by May or June.

“The problem is the connection to the reservoir which is located quite a distance and will take time, and once complete it can supply sufficient water to villages across the district.  The water treatment plant once completed can supply up to 33.33 million litre per day.

On another note, Shafie denied hearing anything about the abolishment of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom). “I have not heard any such thing. Those from Esscom were present at the meeting today,” he said. - Sherell Jeffrey
