Ministry  identifies ‘champion  industries’ for Sarawak
Published on: Friday, January 11, 2019

The Ministry of Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development (Manred) has identified several industries and products with good commercialisation potential to become “champion industries” for the state.

They include commodity crops, food crops, agro-based industry focusing on food processing, livestock industry, and aquaculture industry.

Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas (pic) said the move is part of the ministry’s efforts to meet the goal of making Sarawak a major food producer by 2030.

“It is also to raise the people’s incomes in order to narrow the urban-rural poverty gap, provide job opportunities in the agriculture sector, promote youth involvement in agriculture to overcome the farmer shortage, and increase the state’s gross domestic product,” Uggah, who is also Deputy Chief Minister, said at the 2019 agriculture mandate presentation ceremony here on Thursday.

Also present were Assistant Minister for Native Land Development Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn and Manred Permanent Secretary Datuk Ik Pahon. – Bernama
