Schools are not for doing business

Sandakan: Educators in the State are reminded to avoid actively involved in business. State Minister of Education and Innovation, Datuk Dr. Yusof Yacob said he still received complaints regarding the involvement of several teachers, principals and headmasters in business activities despite being warned.

"The Ministry of Education and Innovation constantly remind educators to avoid doing business or promoting their business. If these teachers want to do their business, they must quit.

"All educators are obliged to focus on their responsibilities, which is to carry the teaching and learning session.

"Educators shall be a good role model for their students," said Yusof, who was speaking to reporters after visiting Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Elopura and Sekolah Seni Malaysia Sabah, here, at Mile 11, Saturday.

Meanwhile, Yusof also encouraged principals or headmasters to report and discuss with their respectives District Education Office on their schools' needs.

"In line with the new government's policy that is to practice a transparent leadership and open for any suggestions and complaints, Principals and headmasters of any dilapilated schools are urged to come forward to discuss the matter with their District Education Office.

"On the other hand, the District Education Office should not hide anything from my Ministry, especially that needs the attention of the State Government," he added.

During the visit to SMK Elopura Bestari and Sekolah Seni Malaysia Sabah, Yusof was briefed by principals, Hajah Kalsom Abd Aziz on the school's condition such as unpaved driveway, dilapilated school building, insufficient classrooms and hostel, the mosque and teachers quarters in dire of repair.

As initial assistance, air-conditioning will be provided for the schools and critical matters will be reviewed before exact allocation can be disbursed.

Apart from visiting SMK Elopura Bestari and Sekolah Seni Malaysia Sabah, Yusof also visited SMK Batu Sapi, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Gas, SK Sungai Anib 2 and SK Batu Putih Baru.

Also present were, Sandakan District Education Officer, Sh.Mahada Sh.Attar and Libaran appointed assemblyman, Jaffari William. - Winnie Kasmir
