Sandakan PPR anti-crime efforts bearing fruit

Sandakan: Police have solved 19 drug related cases and made four arrests involving theft and house break-in cases in the Taman Harmoni People's Housing Project (PPR) residential area here last year.

Sandakan Police Chief ACP Mohd Azhar Hamin said the success is thanks to the cooperation between the local community and the district police.

He said out of the 19 drug related cases, three are under Section 12, 15 under Section 15 and one under Section 94A of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

He said this when met by reporters while monitoring the Voluntary Patrol activity at the PPR Taman Harmoni residential area in Mile 3, here, Saturday.

The patrol involved 50 residents who volunteered together with 20 policemen led by the District Crime Prevention and Community Safety Head DSP Radin Hazlen Radin Harun. The patrol also saw a canine from the Sandakan police headquarters' K9 Unit taking part in patrolling the area.

Azhar explained that that joint patrol is an effort to create a safe environment in the area. "The patrol will be conducted by residents here daily or weekly and we (police) will monitor," he said.

He said the effort was also in accordance with the status of the residential area which has been adopted as the Sandakan police headquarters' second housing area under is PPR Taman Angkat after PPR Sg Manila Mile 12.

The initiative has also seen a positive impact in the area. - Mardinah Jikur
