Two robbed of fish and phones at sea border

Tawau: Two fishermen aged 31 and 35 were robbed by four men, one of them armed, in a sea robbery near the overlapping waters of Malaysia-Indonesia off Hand Rock Sea on Monday (pic).District Police Chief ACP Fadil Marsus said police were informed of the situation at 4.07pm by the victims who were two nautical miles off the border after the incident.

He said the victims were fishing at Hand Rock Sea waters on Dec 29 and stayed two nights at sea.

"At about 3.50pm on Dec 31, the victims saw a speed boat ferrying four individuals approaching them," he said.

Fadil said when the suspects were close to the boat, one of them aimed a weapon at the victims and instructed them to move to the front to enable them (suspects) to embark the fishing boat.

The suspects who were armed with a long firearm and a machete spoke Indonesian and one of them was masked.

He said two of the suspects then took their phones and 12 fish before cutting the rope attached to the fishing boat and fled towards Sg Nyamuk, Indonesia in their 23 feet long speedboat.

The victims then asked help from other fishermen who were near the scene and borrowed their phone to contact the police.

Fadil said the case will be investigated under Police Inquiry Paper as it happened in Indonesian waters. - Lagatah Toyos
