500kg rubbish collected in Sandakan Street Musical cleanup
Sandakan: More than 500 kilogrammes of rubbish were collected during the Street Musical Cleanup programme, which was jointly organised by Trash Hero Sandakan, Persatuan Pendidik Industri Kreatif Sandakan and Wedid Production, on Saturday.Held around Piazza Harbour Mall and Harbour Square, the programme was participated by 150 volunteers.

According to Trash Hero Sandakan founder Norfazilah Rahman, the organisers did not expect such a big turnout of volunteers on that day.

As the title of the programme suggests, volunteers went around to collect rubbish accompanied by music and songs.

"People liked this approach and that's probably why many turned up much to our surprise," she said.

Persatuan Pendidik Industri Kreatif Sandakan chairman Rizuan Johan said unique approach created a happy atmosphere for the volunteers.

"It's just different feeling to go out there to clean up the streets while listening to music and songs," he said, thanking all the participants.

He also said it was the first time the three groups came together to organise the event.

Meanwhile, Brecht Laloep, a Belgian tourist who was among the volunteers, said he did not hesitate to join the moment he saw groups of people collecting rubbish in the streets, what more with all music and songs in the air.

But he made it a point to comment that the town's coastal areas which were littered with rubbish and plastic must be cleaned up as well.

He said rubbish did not give a good impression of Sandakan to a first-time visitor like himself. - Mardinah Jikur
