Illegal Ranau gambling ring crippled, 55 held

Ranau: Police here have crippled an illegal gambling syndicate through "Ops Dadu Khas", which began early this year, that saw 30 raids, arrests and confiscation of items, including RM13,726 cash.Ranau Police Chief DSP Mohd Shahrul Datuk Abdul Wahab said the operation was executed at the IPD Ranau level beginning January this year."This is in line with the call by the Inspector-General of Police to all police contingents in the country to take drastic, consistent and united action against illegal gambling activities," he said.

He said throughout the year, the Crime Investigation Unit in IPD Ranau conducted investigations as well as 30 raids on premises in Ranau and Kundasang, and confiscated various tools and equipment."During the raids, police also arrested a total of 55 individuals comprising 47 men and eight women, all locals, suspected to be involved in illegal gambling activities."Also confiscated were cash totalling RM13,726 and equipment like printers, calculators, stationery, bags and others." Mohd Shahrul said all suspects and confiscated items were being investigated under the Open Gambling House Act 1953 and Betting Act 1953.

He said Ranau PDRM was committed to curbing illegal gambling and would beef up efforts in their fight against such activities."We also want to thank the public for channelling information concerning crime activities, particularly on illegal gambling, and hope such co-operation will continue," he said. - Clarence G Dol
