Fireman's death justifies plea for allowance
Tawau: Sabah Fire and Rescue Workers Union (KEPBOPENS) hopes justice will be served against those involved in assaulting Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim who succumbed to serious injuries following the clash outside a Hindu temple in Selangor last month.

KEPBOPENS President Rogers Tiam @ Aloysius said it is very upsetting that some people would hurt a Fire and Rescue personnel who was at the scene to give humanitarian service.

"I hope that they will be punished by law because they have caused death," he said in a statement, Tuesday.

Rogers said this incident is an eye opener to all on how risky and unpredictable are the work of a Fire and Rescue personnel when carrying out their duties.

He recallled that even Sabah firemen are at risk and cited the July 2015 case of Apolos Jeremos who died of electrocution due to illegal supply connection in a squatter colony in Sandakan.

He said there have also been threats made towards fire and rescue personnel and some were hit while carrying their duties.

He reminded the public that such action is a violation under Section 51 of the Fire Services Act 1988 (amended 2018) which carries a penalty of up to RM50,000 or jail up to five years.

The Act was enforced on Sept 1, 2018 and the amendments includes the scope expansion, enforcement, relief and volunteer fire and rescue team regulatory and others.

KEPBOPENS also congratulated this amendments which was tabled by Fire and Rescue Deputy Commissioner Edwin Galan Teruki which was approved this year.

As a union set up to guard the fire and rescue personnel welfare, KEPBOPENS urged the government to approve some of the relevant special allowance that have been proposed.

"Cases such as this (Adib's death) and other cases are obvious 'proof' to justify the appropriate approvals of the proposals which are still being 'considered' by the government of the day," he added. - Lagatah Toyos
