Tawau ideal as the BIMP-EAGA gateway
Tawau: The district can become a "BIMP-EAGA tourism gateway" with its agri and aquaculture industry, developing eco-tourism sites and the nearby town of Semporna as a hotbed for divers and resort goers.BEBC (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philipines) council Chariman Carl Moosom said Tawau businesses have much interest in BIMP-EAGA and this is welcome and the right avenue for businesses to expand their economic scales better and more competitive.

Local market is subjective due to limited demands but with BIMP-EAGA the potentials are wide ranging from one industry to the next, he said at the BEBC BIMP-EAGA Tawau Councillors Installation Night at Cowie Bay Saturday night.

"I am satisfied with the progress BEBC Tawau has developed over a short period. Their commitment and unwavering teamwork is showing the true mark of businessmen and we hope their leadership will create many more others to fill the gaps of working group clusters," Carl said.

Carl said they sought more industry players to join their team and work together with the State Government to realise their aspiration of a better Sabah.

Currently, Sabah's exports are a fraction compared to import receipts which suggests the high cost of living; with everyone working in unison it may slowly reverse the cycle.

He was confident this is possible as China alone with 1.3 billion population and growing will require more tropical and organic foods in future. That's where they should be focusing, agriculture as an economic transformer, he said.

Chairman of BEBC BIMP-EAGA Tawau, Wong Thart Sin, disclosed that they will transform Tawau into a business sustainable and economic vibrant city to live in.

In business front, BEBC Tawau is committed to exploit the geographic positions of Tawau to transform Tawau into a great tourism hub and to make Tawau the "East Borneo Special Economic Corridors" to link to the "Great Sulu-Sulawesi Economic Corridors", East Kalimantan, other BIMP-EAGA Areas and beyond with the collaborations of BIMP-EAGA development partners, China, Asian Secretariat, Asian Development Bank and North Territory of Australia.- Christy Chok
