BEBC, barter trade boon to Tawau: DCM

Tawau: Deputy Chief Minister-cum-State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew is confident the establishment of BEBC (BIMP-EAGA Business Council) in Tawau and the re-opening of Sabah's barter trade will boost the local economy in the district. Christina, who is also Tawau Member of Parliament, said a new group of businessmen and leaders in the BEBC Tawau Council have been doing well the past two months in promoting trade, tourism, connectivity and business from small to large investors.

Her Ministry would hold a Cuti-Cuti Tawau next year to promote Tawau as a major tourism and food hubs for fresh seafood and local fruits while also work closely with the manifestos of the Council.In respect of Tawau airport, Christina said the Malaysia Airport Berhad is willing to work together with her Ministry in upgrading certain facilities in the airport for the comfort of locals and visitors.Speaking at the BEBC Tawau Councillors Installation Night held at Cowie Bay on Saturday, she said: "I hope the re-opening of the barter trade, cross border trade and transhipment in Sabah could help boost business activity in Tawau, thereby boosting income as well as strengthening the economy of the traders and people of Tawau.

Christina also contributed RM62,000 to several non-governmental organisations (NGO) involving churches and Gabungan Persatuan Cina Daerah Tawau as well as two air-conditions to Al-Hidayat mosque. - Christy Chok
