Sabah: A 300-metre walkway has been erected at Mandalipau River tagal site, about 35km from here, as part of Sayang Sungai 2018 programme organised by Petronas in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries Sabah (DoF) and SK Mandalipau.Tagal is a traditional system unique to Sabah that conserves river resources, resulting in tagal sites where the rivers are teeming with fish.Representatives from DoF, SK Mandalipau, Sabah Parks, Petronas volunteers and members of the local community attended the launch.ADVERTISEMENT Highlight of the launch include the release of 3,000 juvenile fish into the Mandalipau River, a gotong-royong, briefing on tagal management by the DoF and fun-learning activities with SK Mandalipau pupils conducted by Petrosains.General Manager of Petronas Sabah and Labuan Regional Office, Rokiah Sulaiman said: "Sayang Sungai 2018 is part of Petronas initiatives to support local conservation programmes in line with our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)."The Mandalipau tagal site will be maintained and cared for by the Parent-Teacher Association of SK Mandalipau, a school located in the vicinity.ADVERTISEMENT Under the tagal system, fishing activities in certain stretches of a river are controlled through zoning - red (no fishing), yellow (controlled fishing for once or twice a year) and green (fishing allowed all year round).
