Waterfall is Tawau's latest attraction
Tawau: The waterfall of about 40 metres found in Tawau Hills Park last August is now one of the latest attractions in the district. Interestingly, the unnamed waterfall requires visitors to go through a tunnel before reaching the site.

Tawau Hills Park Manager Jufri Nasri said with the new finding, the park now has four recorded waterfalls, Bukit Gelas Waterfall, Table Waterfall, Gunung Lucia Waterfall and the fourth which was discovered by Sabah Parks staff.

"The water is very cold because our air is chilly and the park's forest is also the first terrestrial park," he said to the media, here.

Earlier, he was asked about the reopening of Mount Lucia (1,240 metres tall) to the public in Nov last year which has now recorded 450 climbers.

Meanwhile, Mount Magdalena (1,312 metre tall) which was also closed earlier was also reopened to visitors from Nov this year.

There is also another mountain in the park, namely Mount Maria, which stands at 1,083 metres.

"Mount Magdalena was closed for over a year due to the maintenance work on the trail and we only reopened it to visitors only after making sure that it is ready. The trail to Mount Lucia still uses the old trail," he said.

According to him, the main attraction of the 13-kilometre journey to the peak of Mount Lucia is that visitors get to see beautiful trees, cross clear streams and the Bukit Gelas Waterfall.

In addition, visitors also get to go through two waterfalls, namely Gunung Lucia Waterfall, which is about 15 minutes walk from the old Mount Lucia Waterfall.

Jufri said in terms of safety, climbers have little to worry when conducting activities at Mount Lucia and Mount Magdalena because is constantly being monitored by Mountain Rescue Teams and park staffs.

To this, he urge Tawau residents to visit the park because of its beauty and cleanliness which makes it worthwhile to visit.

"At the Tawau Hills Park, visitors can see a wide variety of animals and trees including the world's tallest tree, the Seraya Kuning Siput species, which is 99.2 metres tall.

"The Seraya Kuning Siput species were recently found in May this year and was launched by Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Christina Liew on July 14," he said. - Lagatah Toyos
