Sinos unhappy with Upko stand
Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Sino Kadazandusun Murut (KDM) Association is dissapointed with the recent statement by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau on the Native Certificate (SAN) issue. Its information chief Jerry Goh (pic) said the issue should had been resolved by now, instead of being towed on.

"Until now the same tune had been sung – they want to rectify this and that…I am fed up with the excuses given by the Government," he told a press conference, here, Friday.

"After four State governments until today, it had yet to be resolved. Yes, we initially agreed with the freeze on the issuance of SAN in 1982 due to its abuse as we thought it would only be a temporary measure.

"But it is unfair that the whole generation of Sino KDMs are affected due to the ill conduct of the few.

"If you are saying that the new government is a government for everyone, then please help the Sino KDMs as well."

Goh said the association was always open for any cooperation with the State Government to resolve the matter.

"If they (State Government) are still looking for the solution, they can work together with the association…we can give ideas on how to solve the problem.

"We are willing to help as only we, ourselves, know the problems faced by the Sino KDMs and that is why we formed the association.

"It is not that we want to supersede other races in the State, we just want our rights back," he said.

Previously, it was reported that Tangau who is also United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) President said the freeze on the issuance of SAN must stay until a fool proof system and procedures are in place.

This, he said, is to prevent abuse and corruption, in a response to an earlier reports quoting Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong who urged the State Government to review the freeze.

Tangau said the certificate was introduced for specific purposes but somehow it was manipulated and abused.

He also stressed that he would do his level best to ensure those who deserved such certificate were not left out from the mainstream of development.

However, Goh said, the freeze had affected many Sino KDMs for 36 years.

"There are about 200,000-300,000 genuine Sino KDMs in the State and I think we can solve this problem in a simple way.

"If people are afraid that the SAN would be abused, then we have the law and we have the Constitution.

"You cannot simply say the freeze must continue, you have to listen to our grievances as well," he said.

Currently, those born after 1982 and needing to confirm their Bumiputera status can get it done by producing the relevant birth or death certificates of their parents to the district Native Court for verification, which would then issue a Letter of Confirmation.

Previously, Sabah Sino KDM Association President Datuk Johnny Goh had said that Sinos had existed before the formation of Malaysia and that prior to the freeze they had no problem in getting the status.
