Sea navy bases still relevant, says outgoing commander
Sandakan: The Tun Sharifah Rodziah and Tun Azizan navy sea bases in Semporna and Sandakan are still relevant to provide assistance in an emergency situation.Royal Malaysian Navy Commander Admiral Tan Sri Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin considered these bases as the navy's innovative projects which were established years ago and has to date produced a visible deterrence.

He said their presence had deterred external threats from encroaching into state waters.

"They will not dare to cause any threats when seeing these assets in the middle of the sea.

"And in case of emergency, response from teams stationed in each base is faster," he told reporters after visiting the Sandakan Regional Navy Headquarters on Saturday.

It was his farewell visit as Navy Commander as he will be retiring in March, 2019 after a 42-year of service including three years as commander. Also present were the Headquarters Commander Rear Admiral Datuk Ganesh Navaratnam and Lieutenant Commander Datuk Charles O Pang.

Meanwhile, touching on the Trilateral Cooperative Arrangement (TCA), Kamarulzaman said the initiative that was laid by the Malaysian navy had received positive response from the neighbouring countries. - Mardinah Jikur
