Tagal rebranding to give it more bite

Tambunan: The Fisheries Department's aggressive rebranding of the traditional 'tagal' system is hoped to give it more bite to protect fish populations in Pegalan River from depleting.The department's move is in line with the global agenda on sustainable development by acting locally to promote food sovereignty.It released 10,000 fish fries in Pegalan River at Kg Tabilong on Wednesday, in the hope that the action would help replenish fish population.

'Tagal' loosely translates "to leave it be" in local indigenous language where a stretch of a river is declared off limits for fishing. The traditional concept allows nature to replenish its fish population and disturbing a 'tagal' area is enforced through the Native Court and heavy fines can be imposed, ranging from money over chicken to pigs, depending on the seriousness of the offence committed.Meanwhile, Community Development Leader Basal Bullah said his unit will work with the District Office to ensure that the Fisheries Department will be able to implement more aggressive approach in enforcing the 'tagal' system in as many areas in the district.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

He urged all communities to also support the move, saying they are the direct beneficiaries as people who are still dependent on the river for food.
