Sandakan can be No 1  bird's nest producer
Sandakan: There are 2,000 swiftlet houses here and most of them are new or about three years old with potential to become the biggest producer of swiftlet nests in the country. Association of Sandakan Bird's Nest Producers President Lim Kim Lu said this to China's Consul-General to Kota Kinabalu, Liang Caide when the latter visited the Swiftlet House, Mile 9.

Started three years ago, its swiftlet nest are also exported to China. Health and People's Wellbeing Minister cum Sandakan MP Datuk Stephen Wong said the Consul-General's visit was part of efforts to showcase the business potentials and opportunities in Sandakan which can bring further progress to the district like swiftlet nest, fish farming and so on.

"It is our initiative as the elected representative in Sandakan. We hope through the visit a collaboration can be formed between Sabah, Sandakan and China.

"We are also striving towards securing approval on swiftlet nest export and also fish export to China," he said.

Among the places visited include the Borneo Aqua Harvest Berhad fish farm at Jalan Kampung Sungai Kayu, the swiftlet house at Mile 9, Jalan Labuk, the swiftlet nest processing premise at Trig Hill and the Chinese Warrior Remembrance Monument at Jalan Astana.

Liang, together with the Special Envoy to China cum Malaysia-China Business Council Chairman, Tan Kok Wai, Sandakan Municipal Council President Datuk Peter Hii Chang Lik, State Youth and Sport Minister cum Tanjung Papat State Assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung and Elopura State Assemblyman Calvin Chong, also had lunch with the Sandakan Chinese business community. At the fish farm, Liang and the others viewed a Giant Grouper (Keratang) reared by the farm owner Datuk Lo Fui Ning since 16 years ago.

"We also welcome the Consul-General's presence in Sandakan and we will bring him to visit tourism areas in the district like the Turtle Island and so on. Sandakan is also blessed with beautiful natural environment," he said.
