KK resident living in fear of crashes
Kota Kinabalu: The Public Works Department (PWD) is looking into a Luyang resident's request for railings to be put up between the main road and the backyard wall in one part of Taman Milek Phase 1.The resident, whose house is located near the Jalan Penampang - Jalan Lintas intersection where a flyover is presently under construction, was under the impression that the railings might offer some protection should a motorist lose control of his/ her car.

"This structure could save lives and spare homeowners from incurring any property damage," she said.

She said drivers had twice lost control of their vehicles, so far, and swerved into the backyard wall. The latest incident took place on a Friday night in October, with a pick-up truck running into the section of the backyard wall behind her home.

"If not for the wire mesh fence around my compound, anyone could walk into my property through the hole in the wall. Thankfully, no lives were lost in both instances."

The resident said prior to the construction of the flyover, there was a drain between the wall and the stretch.

"There were even streetlights along the road shoulder. These facilities have been taken down and the drain, which has been covered, now forms part of Jalan Lintas." She said the road was presently about one metre away from the wall.

She hoped the local authorities would consider erecting a railing, or "safety barricade" of some kind, near the wall.

"Failing this, they should put up some signs to caution motorists while using this part of the road." She said the situation was especially hazardous to motorists at night or during a downpour.

"The poor visibility makes it difficult to gauge the proximity of the road to the wall.

"The main road is pitch black at night without the lights."

She wanted to know why these facilities had been removed and why the road had been extended so close to the houses, including hers. The homeowner related her experience to Hotline in a letter which was forwarded to the Department.

A spokesman for the agency said the relevant section would be informed about this matter.

"We will keep the area under observation to ascertain the potential danger to motorists, before deciding how best to proceed," he said. - Sidney Skinner
