'No compromise' on illegal gambling
Kuala Lumpur: "Ops Dadu Khas", a major police operation aimed at eradicating illegal gambling dens and online gaming activities saw 12,449 raids and 22,300 people arrested nationwide since January.Federal police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said yesterday they also seized or froze accounts amounting to more than RM4.76 million following the raids conducted between January and September.

A total of 26,275 gambling machines, simulators and electronic tablets were also seized.

Wan Ahmad said the significant decline in raids this year compared to 2017 was a result of the total enforcement of the operation which was launched on Sept 21, last year.

The highest number of raids that were conducted was in Johor, Selangor, Sarawak and Negri Sembilan – which made up to almost two-thirds of the total number of raids.

He said apart from charging those arrested in court, police had also invoked the Prevention of Crime Act (Poca) to arrest the masterminds behind the syndicates.

Since 2014, police have arrested 182 suspects involved in unlicensed gambling – 38 of them this year, he added.

"We have never compromised with all forms of illicit gambling activities which include gaming machines, lotteries, bookmaking and open gambling.

"Constant action to eradicate such acivities are conducted regularly with full commitment, and stern action will be taken against CID chiefs at both district and state levels if they are found to ignore illegal gambling activities in their respective areas," Wan Ahmad said.

A special hotline launched on July 20 for the public to tip off police on illegal gambling activities had proved to be successful.

"The hotline has helped in cleaning up unlicensed gambling activities across the country."
